The Community of Bélgica: Culture and Memory

The Bélgica neighborhood in the stately city of Ponce is much more than just a site within the city. It is a community with deep cultural and historical roots, where memory, daily life, and a sense of belonging have left an enduring mark on Ponce's history. Its development is closely linked to the agricultural and urban growth of southern Puerto Rico. Its beginnings date back to the late 19th century, when the lands of the former Hacienda Muñiz, within Ponce's Fourth Ward, began to transform into a residential settlement for workers. That agricultural space took on a new shape with population expansion and the arrival of laborers and artisans drawn by the city's economic boom. Its growth occurred alongside that of the old Camino Real, which connected the urban center with the Playa de Ponce neighborhood. This proximity to the heart of the city and the value of its traditional architecture integrate it into Ponce's historical mosaic. Likewise, it forms part of Ponce's emblematic Fourth Ward.

Bélgica is also a living expression of Ponce's identity as a cradle of artistic talent and a place of cultural affirmation for its people. Its community is distinguished by a deep sense of belonging, by its characteristic humility, and by its commitment to safeguarding its historical and cultural memory. Thanks to this, various community groups have served as a link between the community and the institutions that promote social, educational, and recreational initiatives. This shared energy has made this area a vibrant cultural center, where the memory, creativity, and strength of its people continue to enrich the heritage of Ponce and Puerto Rico.

This exhibition pays homage to an enduring and resilient community through paintings, prints, and photographs that capture not only the beauty of its homes and streets, but also the memory, dignity, and human strength of those who bring it to life. Within this community fabric, the organization Los Hijos de Bélgica, Inc. (The Sons of Bélgica, Inc.), a non-profit community organization based in the Bélgica neighborhood of Ponce, plays a vital role. Its cultural, familial, and social work contributes to preserving and strengthening the historical and community life of this area.

The relationship between Casa Paoli and the Bélgica community is strengthened by the Centro de Economía Creativa’s sponsorship of the Maniobra project. This bond takes on an even deeper meaning when we recognize not only that Casa Paoli’s founding director, Néstor Murray-Irizarry, is a son of this neighborhood, but also the generous dedication of those who, driven by memory, culture, and affection for this community, voluntarily and selflessly support the work of Casa Paoli.
